Hamburgers – How did they come to be?

There are a lot of myths surrounding the hamburger also known as the “America’s favorite food”. A lot of people also claimed to be the first to place beef patty between two slices of white bread. The truth, however, is that we do not know the original creator of hamburger.

The book, “The Art of Cookery made Plain and Easy” by Hannah Glasse in 1758 also included the “Hamburg sausage” suggesting that it should be served with a toasted bread under it.

There is also a believe that hamburger was first eaten in Hamburg, Germany. And even though the inspiration is believed to have come from Hamburg, the sandwich was created much later.

Hamburg, during the 19th century became popular for their beef raised from their countryside cows. The Hamburg beef was then commonly chopped in bits, seasoned moulded into patties, and cooked immediately since there was no refrigerator. Eventually, this Hamburg beef became a substitute for other beef varieties.

When German immigrants arrived America and had their restaurants, the Hamburg steak was featured in their menu as the Americanized version.

To prepare the Hamburg steak: Pound a slice of steak to break the fibre. Fry two or three onions, finely minced, in butter until lightly browned. Spread your onions over your meat and fold the ends together then pound again, to keep the onions in the middle. Grill for about three minutes, then spread with butter, salt and pepper.”

Tip: The secret to making a great turkey burger is to find a balance between drying out the meat enough to bind with the burger together and topping extra fat to keep it moist.

  • 1½ pound of ground turkey/frozen turkey patties
  • ¼ cup of Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup shredded cheese
  • 1 egg

  1. Preheat grill to high heat
  2. Beat your egg slightly in a large bowl, then add all the other ingredients and mix thoroughly. You can do this with your hand.
  3. Split the mixture into 4 equal sizes and form into patties. If you are not going to cook immediately, you can put the patties into the refrigerator. This will also help the ingredients blend in properly. So if you are not in a hurry, you can refrigerate it for about 30 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle salt and pepper on the burger.
  5. Spray your grill with a little olive oil and allow it to cook for about 5-6 minutes.
  6. During the last minutes, add your cheese, cover and grill for a minute.
  7. Assemble your burger and it is ready

The ingredients are the same. All you need is a pack of frozen spinach. The next thing to do is defrost your spinach and drain. Mix thoroughly all the ingredients like you would for your normal burger and cook thoroughly over medium heat.

“It is amazing how easy it is to prepare good food.” I know that these are your thoughts at this time because they were actually my thoughts.

Wish to know the exciting part?

It takes about 15 minutes to prepare. Everything for this burger remains the same. Just mix your ingredients thoroughly with Greek herbs and cook for about 6 minutes and serve.

Seasoning your premade turkey burger

There are several ingredients you can use to season your premade turkey burger.

Using special spices: mix your spices together, then sprinkle a bit of it on the patty and allow it to cook. You have to add your spices carefully so that it does not get too tasty.

For your special seasoning, I will suggest cinnamon which adds an exotic taste to your burger or the garam marsala which adds heat and flavour. Asides these ones, you can get creative and try whatever spice you want to.

Using vegetables: To season your burger with vegetable, simply sauce your vegetables in a pan after your burger has been cooked.

Tomatoes, onions, pepper and mushroom are vegetables you should include when preparing your frozen turkey burger.

Using sauces: There are several sauces to choose from. These include the bottled or homemade barbecue sauce, steak sauce, or hot pepper sauce. What about the leftovers of browned bits of burger in your cooking pan? You can make your sauce from that as well. You do not need to allow it go to waste.

You can either pour the sauce over the burger before cooking or after.

It all depends on what you prefer.

Using herbs: Dry or fresh herbs can be used when preparing the frozen turkey burger. However, I will advise that you use the dry herbs. The fresh herbs have moisture in it that steams the burger and so, it will not give you the brown crust.

To season with herbs, simply add your herbs to the mayonnaise, and then spread on the bread or bun.

For your herbs you can try the basil, lemon thyme, oregano, or the rosemary.

There is just so much you can do with your turkey burger. Give your kids something to look forward to at home. Make them some burger!

There are a lot of burgers out there, and I’m sure you’ve been wanting to make the simple, creamy and delicious frozen turkey burger. Try this recipe, I promise you’ll not think of a restaurant for your burger afterward.
